Primary maths is mostly fluency and confidence. A student who is quick and certain with number facts has attention left over for the thinking; one who is still counting on fingers spends it all on the arithmetic. Most of the ground we make up at this age is number: place value, basic facts, fractions and decimals, and reading a word problem carefully enough to know what it actually asks.
