What this lesson covers
- Numbers from 0 to 120 go in order, one more each time.
- Each digit sits in the hundreds, tens or ones place.
- To compare, look at hundreds, then tens, then ones.
- Numbers can be said in te reo Māori, like rua tekau for 20.
Counting past 100
- Each number is one more than the number before it.
- After 99 comes 100. Then 101, 102, 103, all the way to 120.
- After 109 comes 110, just like 9 then 10.

- A ten-stick is 10 cubes joined up. A flat of ten ten-sticks is 100.
- 47 is 4 ten-sticks and 7 single cubes.
- 118 is 1 hundred, 1 ten and 8 ones.

Numbers in words
- Say the tens, then the ones: thirty-six.
- Past 100, say "one hundred and" first.
| Number | In words |
|---|---|
| 36 | thirty-six |
| 70 | seventy |
| 104 | one hundred and four |
| 119 | one hundred and nineteen |
Which number is bigger?
- Look at the hundreds first. 109 has a hundred and 98 does not, so 109 is bigger.
- If the hundreds match, look at the tens. 86 has 8 tens and 68 has 6 tens, so 86 is bigger.
- If the tens match too, look at the ones. 54 is bigger than 52.
| Numbers | Bigger | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 109 and 98 | 109 | it has a hundred |
| 68 and 86 | 86 | 8 tens beat 6 tens |
| 54 and 52 | 54 | 4 ones beat 2 ones |
Numbers in te reo Māori
- One to ten: tahi, rua, toru, whā, rima, ono, whitu, waru, iwa, tekau.
- For the teens, say tekau mā and the ones: tekau mā tahi is 11.
- For tens, say the number of tens then tekau: rua tekau is 20, rima tekau is 50.
- 100 is kotahi rau.
| Number | Te reo Māori |
|---|---|
| 11 | tekau mā tahi |
| 12 | tekau mā rua |
| 20 | rua tekau |
| 23 | rua tekau mā toru |

Common mistakes
- One hundred and six is written 1006.Write 106: 1 hundred, 0 tens and 6 ones.
