Adding and Taking Away: Facts to 20 and Tens
What this lesson covers
- Facts to 20 can be learned by heart, like 17 + 3 = 20.
- Adding and taking away undo each other.
- A small fact helps with tens: 7 + 2 = 9, so 70 + 20 = 90.
- With three numbers, look for a ten first.
Facts to 20
- Some facts are worth knowing by heart, so you do not have to count.
- Pairs that make 10 help a lot: 6 + 4, 7 + 3, 8 + 2.
- Pairs that make 20 work the same way: 17 + 3, 16 + 4.
| Fact | Also true |
|---|---|
| 6 + 4 = 10 | 4 + 6 = 10 |
| 17 + 3 = 20 | 3 + 17 = 20 |
| 8 + 7 = 15 | 7 + 8 = 15 |
| 9 + 9 = 18 | double 9 is 18 |

Adding and taking away undo each other
- 8 + 5 = 13. Take the 5 away again and you are back at 8.
- So one adding fact gives you two taking-away facts.
- Use this to check: if 13 − 5 = 8, then 8 + 5 should be 13.
| Adding fact | Taking-away facts |
|---|---|
| 8 + 5 = 13 | 13 − 5 = 8 and 13 − 8 = 5 |
| 12 + 6 = 18 | 18 − 6 = 12 and 18 − 12 = 6 |
Doubles and halves
- A double is a number added to itself: double 6 is 6 + 6 = 12.
- A half undoes a double: half of 12 is 6.
| Double | Half |
|---|---|
| double 5 = 10 | half of 10 = 5 |
| double 6 = 12 | half of 12 = 6 |
| double 8 = 16 | half of 16 = 8 |
| double 9 = 18 | half of 18 = 9 |
| double 10 = 20 | half of 20 = 10 |
A small fact for a big sum
- 7 + 2 = 9, so 7 tens and 2 tens make 9 tens: 70 + 20 = 90.
- 9 − 4 = 5, so 90 − 40 = 50.
| Small fact | Tens fact |
|---|---|
| 7 + 2 = 9 | 70 + 20 = 90 |
| 9 − 4 = 5 | 90 − 40 = 50 |
| 3 + 5 = 8 | 30 + 50 = 80 |
Adding tens or adding ones
- 32 + 20: add 2 tens. The tens digit changes: 52.
- 32 + 2: add 2 ones. The ones digit changes: 34.
- Taking away works the same way.
| Sum | What changes | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| 32 + 20 | tens | 52 |
| 32 + 2 | ones | 34 |
| 58 − 30 | tens | 28 |
| 58 − 3 | ones | 55 |
Try it: hop in tens or ones
Three numbers at once
- 7 + 3 + 6: find a ten first. 7 + 3 = 10, then 10 + 6 = 16.
- 4 + 5 + 6: add 4 and 6 first to make 10, then add 5. That is 15.
- 9 + 5 − 4: 9 + 5 = 14, then 14 − 4 = 10.
| Sum | First | Then |
|---|---|---|
| 7 + 3 + 6 | 7 + 3 = 10 | 10 + 6 = 16 |
| 4 + 5 + 6 | 4 + 6 = 10 | 10 + 5 = 15 |
| 9 + 5 − 4 | 9 + 5 = 14 | 14 − 4 = 10 |
Common mistakes
- 32 + 20 = 3420 is 2 tens, so the tens digit goes up: 32 + 20 = 52.
- Half of 18 is 8.Half of 18 is 9, because 9 + 9 = 18.
- 13 − 5 = 7Check by adding: 8 + 5 = 13, so 13 − 5 = 8.
