1 of 9Next →
What this lesson covers
- The numbers from 0 to 1,000 go in order, each one more than the last.
- Each digit's place tells you what it is worth.
- Ten ones make a ten, ten tens make a hundred, and ten hundreds make a thousand.
- To compare two numbers, look at the biggest place first.
Counting all the way to 1,000
- The numbers from 0 to 1,000 go in order.
- Each number is one more than the number before it.
- After 99 comes 100. After 999 comes 1,000.
- 1,000 is the first number with four digits.
Hundreds, tens and ones
- A three-digit number has a hundreds place, a tens place and a ones place.
- In 347, the 3 is worth 300, the 4 is worth 40 and the 7 is worth 7.
- 300 + 40 + 7 = 347.
- 1,000 needs a fourth place: thousands. Ten hundreds make one thousand.
| Thousands | Hundreds | Tens | Ones |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 4 | 7 | |
| 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Try it: build a number
Read it, write it, build it
- Say the hundreds first, then the tens and ones together.
- A zero holds a place when there are none of that size.
| Number | In words | Base 10 blocks |
|---|---|---|
| 347 | three hundred and forty-seven | 3 hundreds, 4 tens, 7 ones |
| 509 | five hundred and nine | 5 hundreds, 0 tens, 9 ones |
| 860 | eight hundred and sixty | 8 hundreds, 6 tens, 0 ones |
| 1,000 | one thousand | 10 hundreds |
Try it: build it with blocks
Which number is bigger?
- Start with the hundreds. More hundreds means a bigger number.
- If the hundreds are the same, look at the tens.
- If the tens are the same too, look at the ones.
| Compare | Look at | Bigger |
|---|---|---|
| 625 and 571 | hundreds: 6 and 5 | 625 |
| 438 and 483 | tens: 3 and 8 | 483 |
| 752 and 759 | ones: 2 and 9 | 759 |
Try it: hop along to 1,000
Putting numbers in order
- Order 412, 98, 421 and 400 from smallest to largest.
- 98 has no hundreds, so it is the smallest.
- The others all have 4 hundreds. Look at the tens: 400 has 0, 412 has 1, 421 has 2.
- Smallest to largest: 98, 400, 412, 421.
Common mistakes
- In 352, the 5 is worth 5.The 5 is in the tens place, so it is worth 50.
- Three hundred and six is written 3006.It is written 306. The 0 holds the tens place.
- 98 is bigger than 412 because 9 is bigger than 4.98 has no hundreds. 412 has 4 hundreds, so 412 is bigger.
